Unsung MVP: Donovan Mitchell

By: Michael Tolliver Jr (Opinionated MJ)

How is it that Nikola Jokic is being considered for MVP, I personally have Steph in there, LeBron is always in there, and Embiid is my #1 for MVP, but many are simply NOT including Donovan Mitchell for MVP? 15 wins over the last 16 games? Spida can’t get any consideration right now although he is apart of the best team in the league? Are we rewriting the narative for MVP right now? Are we considering his teammates? If that’s the case, we need to eliminate LeBron from contention as well. Why won’t you plug Mitchell into this discussion?

Shaq should’ve been enough to put all eyes on Donovan. He has delivered. He’s been seamless alongside Conley this season. Yes, he has Rudy Gobert, and I’ve seen a list that features Rudy for MVP but not Donovan. Steph Curry isn’t even on that list. Validity killed, right? Ha. What is the requirement now? It seems like everyone is all over the place. The typical voters will likely still choose LeBron since AD is playing more like Kevin Love with half a Minny & Cavs jersey on nowadays. It happens when you’re playing next to one of the biggest stars in the game. Unless you’re on the Brooklyn Nets.

He should at least be at #2. If we’re going on “best player, best team” as of right now, Utah is 19-5, Philly is 17-7. Why are we not considering Donovan Mitchell for MVP? I need answers. Are we still stuck on following LeBron’s age, years, and mileage? Are we suprised with a focused Embiid? Are we too in love with the numbers Jokic is putting up? I’ll ask a real question. Are we stuck on assists being the pathway to an MVP? Why pass more when you can score more, that’s my take. If we’re enamored with ball movement, then LaMelo Ball and Steph Curry should be the frontrunners. Yes LAMELO BALL. Let’s not ignore the fact the everyone has totally cemented the mentality that Giannis can’t get another until he can make 3’s and make the finals, although he also doesn’t have a flat out second star like DONOVAN MITCHELL!

Eventually these narratives will turn into harsh truths and won’t be able to be denied. Kind of like Giannis latest MVP award. If you fully remove Donovan from this team, are they #1 in the league right now? Are they looking like a team that can give any team an issue in the West? Did we ignore what happened in the bubble for him? If so, then the entire bubble doesn’t matter.

I think it’s on another level. No one believes the Jazz can take a series from Denver, or any of the LA teams. Is that what is fueling the idea that Donovan doesn’t fit the mold? Too early? Too young? That shouldn’t creep into your mind when you think of him. He’s arrived and he will only continue to get better. I like Jamal Murray, but Donovan has been more consistent this season. It’s time to give him his respect. I could play the seconds a drinking game with this. Would you rather Gobert or PG? Gobert or AD? Gobert or CJ? Gobert or Kyrie or Harden? I personally can’t put a player with another superstar at the forefront of the MVP race. I have many mottos. The one that applies here is that “great players make great players greater.”

Donovan is doing this for his whole team. Take notice before it’s too late and give him his proper respect. #1 in the league.

How so?

I was the reason why we lost 3-1 to the Warriors. I was the reason why I won MVP and couldn’t win in the playoffs. I was the reason why KD left. I was the reason why Harden was traded, for monetary reasons. I was the reason we haven’t exceeded expectations. I want my MVP! I want my MVP Award! Triple double! Triple double! Why not?

Why did Ibaka get traded? Why did KD not communicate with me that he was leaving? Why didn’t my organization retain Scott Brooks? My organization gave me a max deal. Me, me, me, me, ME!

I averaged a triple double! If anyone else did, they would be a basketball god! I’m not even recognized? You don’t see my drive? My intensity? Why not? Even MJ sees it! There’s no way you could expect me to win alone. You think I’m villainous? You think I’m all about myself? Ok? How so?

Now I sacrifice my game. Now we win without me performing beyond expectations. We have now pieces and still aren’t at full health. We’re the team that will certainly rival the Warriors in the playoffs this year. Why can’t you see my worth on the floor? Why can’t you see I should be considered Top 5? Why not?

I’m a villain because KD left? I’m an alpha, that’s true. KD is being called expletives over there. I just wanted to win. I support my teammates. I ride or die for my team. I am a great athlete rather you admit it or not. Oh, so and so could average a triple double huh? Why haven’t they? Why is it me? Why not?

I have proven that I have grown. I have proven what I’m all about now. Are you watching? Are you only looking at percentages? What about my effect from me being on the floor? What happens if we make the finals? What if I win a championship this year? Why not? Then what will you have to say? What’s next??

Sleeping Giannis… 2019 MVP Dark Horse

By: Opinionated MJ

We’re long overdue for giving this man his respect. I think we’ve ignored him because maybe the east was dominated by other headlines that didn’t involve Giannis. LeBron, Kyrie, Raptors, Gordon Hayward, and everything else that wasn’t quite Giannis. We even worried about rather the Wizards were ready to move on without John Wall. The most we remember about the Bucks season is that Jason Kidd was fired and Giannis tried to prevent it. We had a Game of Zones episode that also brought humor into insight.

The Bucks have let go of Jabari Parker, Who also became a headline. Again, they fired Jason Kidd. We forgot about how the season began with a bang from Giannis. He was definitely my early pick for MVP last year. I think LeBron being alone and having roster issues and James Harden ascending with Chris Paul on his team became the narrative for MVP. We were also glued to the screen whenever Russell Westbrook to the floor. Just more stories that led us to ignoring Giannis.

He’s overlooked, often. I think I know why. Maybe it’s because he hasn’t made noise in the playoffs yet. Usually MVP candidate make noise in the playoffs. They have to have explosive and unstoppable games. The last player I can think of that did this was Derrick Rose. No matter how much that’s an afterthought. He fought the Big 3 Celtics. He fought against the Big 3 Miami Heat. It helped him make a name for himself. It put him in rare territory. It made him the youngest MVP. Maybe that’s what the media is waiting to see from Giannis. Maybe they’re just not giving him his respect because there’s no narrative behind him. No storyline. That seems to be what the NBA is all about right now.

This is the season. It’s his time now to make an impact and even become a threat to take the #1 seed in the east. That should be enough to afford him an MVP Award. We’ve watched Anthony Davis put numbers up like Apple when a new iPhone drops. No MVP. No true playoff noise. LeBron has gone west and this puts a huge spotlight on the Eastern Conference.

This will be the season that Giannis has the chance to finally fall into MVP territory. There’s no more smokescreens. There’s no more excuses. There can be no losinh to the Celtics without their two stars. You have to dismantle any short-handed teams. You have to make Kawhi think twice about being in the east. You have to etch yourself into unstoppable territory and takeover the east. There’s no better time than now too write this chapter. Although I made a list of my 10 MVP candidates going into this season without Giannis on it, he is my true dark horse candidate. The one that can change the landscape.

I expect Giannis to take the league by storm this season… Or we’ll continue to not hear about Giannis in the conversation. Time to live up to the challenge handed down to you from Kobe. Time for you to step up to dominance. No more sleepwalking.

Rambling Thought: NBA January 2017

By: Opinionated MJ

The New Year has featured Russell Westbrook dropping a triple double in 19 game minutes. James Harden dropped a monster triple double as well with 53 points. Giannis Antetokounmpo dropped a monster statline reminiscent of something we seen in smaller packages from Andrei Kirilenko. LeBron and Kyrie are running the Eastern Conference. The Warriors are still the best in the West, although stumbling in places they once succeeded. MVP candidates throughout those teams.

DeMarcus Cousins will be apart of the Boston Celtics. The Bulls will land a stretch 4. The a Pistons will find themselves. The Jazz will continue to amaze with their silent rise. It’s also scary that Memphis is always competitive and playing in between all the other top 8 out west. They’re a star away, maybe Paul George.

Typically, the Cavs will make the finals as they usually do. It’s crazy out west once you get past Golden State and San Antonio. I think we may see the Jazz, Rockets, and Thunder all make the playoffs. They’re in the thick of things. It’ll be fun to watch who will occupy the 8th seed leading up to a fun playoff. No one out East to contest Cleveland. They await. Rightfully so, since they’re the defending champs. As long as their big 3 is healthy.

Russell Westbrook will win the MVP award if his team stays a top 4 seed. He’s a given if that is achieved. I don’t see how anyone else wins it, rightfully. The league could get hacked right? Vote in all the bigs for the All Star game. That’s justice.

The Knicks are currently on another skid, as well as the Clippers. This is only fueling Melo for Blake rumors. I think it would actually work for both teams although that would cause some more rotation issues I think New York finally has figured out. The Knicks honestly just need bench depth. A scorer here, defender there, enforcer there, and boom! They’re a contender. The east is weak enough that they could rise to number 3. Even the 2nd seed isn’t a foregone thing to me.

I expect the second half of the season to be exciting. I’m looking forward to seeing what east team will take a risk and stop being afraid of failure. No risk, no reward. Someone needs to chase Cousins. Someone needs to go after Blake, CP3, Melo. I want to see a great competitor developed to truly contest Cleveland. Make it interesting to see them against someone out east. Instead of it being the “leastern” conference. The “feast on” conference, the “least strong” conference. I could go on. We’ll see where the season goes from here. Starting with wondering if Rondo will be in the NBA anymore after the latest news.

I love this game.
