Why Doesn’t Mainstream NBA Media Shine a Light On All the Other Stars?

By: Michael Tolliver Jr (Opinionated MJ)

Dear NBA Media, this is for you.

We know that Steph Curry is the greatest shooter ever. We know that KD is one of the best scorers ever. We know that LeBron James is in the goat conversation in the minds of many. Why dont we know anything about the other stars around the league? Maybe I’m overexaggerating. We hear about Kawhi, Jokic, Embiid a bit, Harden, Kyrie… I just dont hear enough about the other good players in the league to my liking.

We know about the Boston duo of Tatum & Brown. I haven’t seen any articles or Twitter posts or polls about Tatum. I haven’t heard anyone trying to insert Brown into the MVP conversation. He’s consistently ascended every year and has yet to really be given his proper due. Currently, I have Joel Embiid as my front-runner for MVP. He’s been slighted if you ask me. Still sitting behind LeBron because of year whatever and add in the playoff games, it’s however many more season. He’s been labeled as the second best center behind Jokic since the Joker passes more. They both are on the same level if you ask me. I’ll ignore standings since it isn’t game 65 and say that Embiid and Jokic are my top 2 for MVP regardless of record. If you remove both from their teams roster, which team is more likely to succeed in the playoffs? Neither.

I haven’t heard anything about what Jerami Grant has been doing for the Pistons. Team losing more than winning so his output doesn’t matter to you? Detroit has been very competitive. That’s step 1. I haven’t heard about the fact that my dark horse Orlando Magic, year in and year out, still make the playoffs. The Key? Nikola Vucevic. NOBODY talks about him at all. Only Aaron Gordon. He’s cool too. The team just can’t stay healthy. While I’m speaking about the Magic, I seen more articles about Markelle Fultz being injured than I seen about him actually ascending. Overcoming his jumpshot woes or whatever the media made me adopt within my perception. I always remained a fan. Get well soon.

I haven’t heard much about Donovan Mitchell until Shaq made it his business to try to rile him up to turn into Kobe. Everybody reacted in a soft manner. Nobody is built for the harsh criticism that makes you breakthrough. The things that give you even more to play for. Everybody are “yes men”. I was raised different and I loved every second of it. I expect a supernova now. Ja Morant, Jamal Murray, Jimmy Butler. I’m all over the place. Media was all over them in the bubble. Now it’s back to the usual? Mainstream media seems to only bash the players when they don’t live up to “their” expectations. See Pascal Siakam. See Shai Gilgeous Alexander. Even Zion Williamson. Fans turned on him cause they thought the NBA was trying to force him into the bubble. Cue my favorite line, “YOU STILL GOTTA PLAY!”

I won’t mention Dame since you finally all give him his respect. It was well overdue. I guess Giannis isn’t an MVP candidate anymore because he won 2 in a row. He’s got to win a title before you give him another? Sure. Based upon how the media awards MVPs, I’m sure he should still be top 3 with Embiid and Jokic, but you’ve got motives, right? This dude turned Brook Lopez into a defensive threat and his presence allowed for Lopez to comfortably extend his range. Keep sleeping.

At some point, you’ve got to acknowledge the star power that exists throughout the entire league. When LeBron, KD, and Steph retire, I anticpate you’ll all become chickens with your heads cut off. Your only attachment at this current moment is Luka, but he’s been losing so you can’t crown him. Maybe your strategy is flawed. Watch the players over the entire NBA and realize there’s more to be consumed than what you’ve been watching for an extended period of time.

We paid heavy attention to Grant Hill, Jason Kidd, Kobe, Iverson, T-Mac, Vince Carter, LeBron, KG, Dirk, Tim Duncan, and others that came before and after them as soon as they hit the league. Mainstream media has Luka in this space but this time with NO variety. I think it’s time for you to skip a few games of whoever you love and to watch what’s happening across the league before you end up scrambling to acknowledge them… Once it’s too late and you’re the last to report on them. That’s the true definition of being a bandwagon fan and front-running. Then you’ll oversaturate everything. Don’t say I’m not telling the truth. Don’t run into the rookie wall.

Sleeping Giannis… 2019 MVP Dark Horse

By: Opinionated MJ

We’re long overdue for giving this man his respect. I think we’ve ignored him because maybe the east was dominated by other headlines that didn’t involve Giannis. LeBron, Kyrie, Raptors, Gordon Hayward, and everything else that wasn’t quite Giannis. We even worried about rather the Wizards were ready to move on without John Wall. The most we remember about the Bucks season is that Jason Kidd was fired and Giannis tried to prevent it. We had a Game of Zones episode that also brought humor into insight.

The Bucks have let go of Jabari Parker, Who also became a headline. Again, they fired Jason Kidd. We forgot about how the season began with a bang from Giannis. He was definitely my early pick for MVP last year. I think LeBron being alone and having roster issues and James Harden ascending with Chris Paul on his team became the narrative for MVP. We were also glued to the screen whenever Russell Westbrook to the floor. Just more stories that led us to ignoring Giannis.

He’s overlooked, often. I think I know why. Maybe it’s because he hasn’t made noise in the playoffs yet. Usually MVP candidate make noise in the playoffs. They have to have explosive and unstoppable games. The last player I can think of that did this was Derrick Rose. No matter how much that’s an afterthought. He fought the Big 3 Celtics. He fought against the Big 3 Miami Heat. It helped him make a name for himself. It put him in rare territory. It made him the youngest MVP. Maybe that’s what the media is waiting to see from Giannis. Maybe they’re just not giving him his respect because there’s no narrative behind him. No storyline. That seems to be what the NBA is all about right now.

This is the season. It’s his time now to make an impact and even become a threat to take the #1 seed in the east. That should be enough to afford him an MVP Award. We’ve watched Anthony Davis put numbers up like Apple when a new iPhone drops. No MVP. No true playoff noise. LeBron has gone west and this puts a huge spotlight on the Eastern Conference.

This will be the season that Giannis has the chance to finally fall into MVP territory. There’s no more smokescreens. There’s no more excuses. There can be no losinh to the Celtics without their two stars. You have to dismantle any short-handed teams. You have to make Kawhi think twice about being in the east. You have to etch yourself into unstoppable territory and takeover the east. There’s no better time than now too write this chapter. Although I made a list of my 10 MVP candidates going into this season without Giannis on it, he is my true dark horse candidate. The one that can change the landscape.

I expect Giannis to take the league by storm this season… Or we’ll continue to not hear about Giannis in the conversation. Time to live up to the challenge handed down to you from Kobe. Time for you to step up to dominance. No more sleepwalking.

Real Quick: NBA Coaching Conundrum

By Opinionated MJ (Michael Tolliver)

I’ve got a few problems with the makeup of these organizations and the moves they’ve been making when it comes to coaching. I was shocked by the latest move by the Milwaukee Bucks to fire Jason Kidd. I believe in a few things when it comes to coaching, and the most important thing to me is development and building confidence. I’ll have to get to those later. There are more important things I’ve got to make clear first.

Support Your Superstar

What happened to the teams that know they must keep their star happy? What exactly happened here? Was Giannis in on the firing or did the organization just notify him? Did he tell them OK and “act” as if he was panicking to Kidd, or does he really want him there. I think it’s the latter. Jason Kidd was making a huge impact on the trajectory of Giannis Antetokounmpo. Kidd just helped the Bucks return to the playoffs and you’re already ready to cut him short? What has reportedly happened between him and the owner or the players that didn’t even allow him to be considered on the “hot seat” before receiving his pink slip? He told Giannis that all he could do to help him was to, “tell the truth”. This leads me to believe that if Giannis reveals anything in Kidd’s favor, I expect him to leave when his chance comes. I’ve seen this story play out too many times. Only Steve Kerr was able to help his team ascend and keep everyone in tow in the process. Plus none of the Warriors were considered the potential heir to LeBron James (or KD) in being the next best player in the world.

Business Comes Before Personal

What happened to the organizations that would at least wait till season’s end before they made drastic moves? Especially to a team that could potentially contend. Another big problem is that coaches have been thrown under the bus while their best players are hurt. Let me repeat that, coaches have been thrown under the bus and/or fired while their best players are hurt. This has always thrown teams off going forward. A few of the coaches who met an axe with injured stars were Mike Malone, Tom Thibodeau, David Fizdale, and now Jason Kidd. Malone had DeMarcus Cousins out, Thibs didn’t have Rose, Fizdale didn’t have Mike Conley, and Jason Kidd was missing Giannis for multiple games going forward and over the last couple of seasons, he’s not had Chris Middleton and Jabari Parker for extended periods. This team has very rarely been healthy and able to play at full strength.

Personal History

Some people, players, coaches, General Managers, assistant coaches, honestly everyone at some point in their lives doesn’t get a fair shake because someone is judging the others based upon reasons that actually don’t affect them in their workplace, in a business relationship, or in a friendship. Apparently Jason Kidd got the job because of his personal relationship with those in the Front Office, so now what’s to be made of it? If people from every profession can coexist and succeed, you don’t always have to like one another. I think we live in a much more sensitive time now where personal feelings has become more important in professional everything than simply putting together a successful team and being successful. It’s not great to be around a bunch of yes men who never test you or tell you truths. Hopefully the Bucks find their mid-season Steve Kerr or we’ll see the ramifications of impatience decimate them going forward. Anyone remember Phil Jackson being allowed to walk away from success while with the Lakers on his own? I also remember why they didn’t get him back but instead went with D’Antoni. We know everything that took place thereafter.

Good luck Bucks! Hopefully you haven’t destroyed Giannis chances to be 2018 MVP.
